It’s Monday, and we’re talking the trade of all trades, ladies getting well-deserved recognition and, of course, the Super Bowl.
The Sports World is Shook
In a shocking move, Luka Doncic joined the LA Lakers (NBA—National Basketball Association) in a blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round pick to the Dallas Mavericks.
Even NBA players were blindsided. LeBron James, Luka’s new teammate, was stunned. The Phoenix Suns were finding out from fans courtside, passing them their phones to read the breaking news.
So, what does this mean for Luka?
Luka was set to sign a Supermax contract worth $345. with the Mavericks. But after the trade? The Lakers can only offer him a five-year, $229M deal. That’s a cool $116M pay cut. Ouch.
And let’s talk taxes. Texas has no state income tax. But now, Luka will be playing in California, which has the highest tax rate in the country—14.4% for millionaires. That’s a big hit on his paycheck.
But maybe winning a championship with LeBron is worth it? We’ll have to wait and see.
WNBA Legends Get Their Flowers
It’s only fitting that on February 2nd (2-2), we saw two legendary women’s basketball players have their jerseys retired.
A’ja Wilson had her No. 22 jersey retired by South Carolina in a ceremony that left the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) MVP in tears.
Iowa retired Caitlin Clark's No. 22 right after they upset USC at home. USC’s coach made sure the team stayed to witness the moment, recognizing Caitlin’s impact on women’s sports.
