  • A model life. Have you ever wanted to be a 39-year-old NFL quarterback with five Super Bowl rings but not sure what it takes? (Our problem too). New England Patriots' Tom Brady will let you in on some of his secrets in his new book hitting the shelves just in time for football season. We have no doubt that a stunning model wife and a mostly vegan diet are two of the tips.

Overtime

  • Stop the presses, the Instagram Rich List is out. This list pertains to the money earned from a post on Instagram. Soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list for athletes, earning over $398,000 per post, although he's third in overall earnings. He doesn’t hold a candle to the cash Selena Gomez (#1) and Kim Kardashian (#2) bring in.

Sideline stat

  • The report of annual earnings for college athletic departments has been released. As no surprise to anyone, college athletics are big business. In 2015-2016, there were 28 universities that brought in over $100 million each. We bet you can’t guess which school is #1? Here’s the full list.

Coaches' Corner

  • Los Angeles Dodgers star pitcher Clayton Kershaw was selected to pitch in the MLB (Major League Baseball) All-Star Game on Tuesday, but he won’t actually have a chance to pitch in it. He, along with his team, decided because he's pitching on Sunday before the Tuesday All-Star game, he shouldn't play. The health of his arm is more important and he's putting his team first.

Holy moly it’s Friday. It seemed like we’d never get here. That’s the same thought we had when Ronda Rousey announced her return to ring this week. We have that covered along with baseball, football, NASCAR and more. Now go forth and impress your friends with your sports talk.

MLB (Major League Baseball)

  • California dreamin’. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Washington Nationals last night to win Game Five in the NLDS (National League Division Series) and advance to the next round of the playoffs. Game One and Game Four starting pitcher, Clayton Kershaw took one for the team and attained the last two outs. The Dodgers will take on the Chicago Cubs in a best-of-seven series starting tomorrow.   
  • A rivalry brewing? The Cleveland Indians and the Toronto Blue Jays battle it out for the ALCS (American League Championship Series) starting tonight. If this match-up between cities seems familiar, it’s because the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers played each other in the NBA playoffs last season. The Cavaliers prevailed and we’ll see if the Indians can do the same.

NHL (National Hockey League)

  • Leaving a mark. The number one pick of the draft, Auston Matthews, started his hockey career off doing something never before accomplished. Matthews scored four goals in his first game. Los Angeles Kings’ (hockey) Marian Gaborick tweeted “Since the start of this game I didnt (sic) even have a chance to drink 4 beers and hes (sic) got 4 goals #Matthews.”  

UFC (ULTIMATE FIGHTER CHAMPIONSHIP)

  • Don’t call it a comeback. In November 2015 the unbeatable Ronda Rousey was knocked out, losing the fight. Rousey hasn’t fought since. Until now. This week she announced that on December 30th she will step into the octagon to earn back her belt from current champion Amanda Nunes. (PS – You might recognize Rousey from the Entourage movie where she played Turtle’s love interest).

NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing)

  • Off to see the wizard. NASCAR’s “Chase for the Cup” (elimination-style playoffs) heads to Kansas this weekend. Driver Jimmie Johnson has already secured his spot in the next round of eight drivers. Which driver will follow the yellow brick road to claim their spot in the next round?  

Overtime

  • The San Francisco 49ers (football) starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick takes on the Buffalo Bills this weekend. Kaepernick gained notoriety by kneeling during the national anthem and wearing pig socks to protest “rogue cops.” Coincidentally, the Bills' LeSean McCoy is inviting a group of 20 police and inner-city kids to attend the game through his foundation.  

Sideline stat

  • Hurricane Matthew lead to the cancellation of LSU (Louisiana State) - Florida game last weekend and neither team had an open date to reschedule the game. Call it a miracle but the schools came to an agreement to play the game on November 19th, a date previously scheduled against other teams. LSU will buy out their previously scheduled opponent South Alabama for $1.5 million and Florida will pay $500,000 to Presbyterian.

Coaches’ Corner

  • The Dodgers called on the starting pitcher from a previous game, Clayton Kershaw, to take the pitching mound and get the last two outs. Why is this a big deal? Starting pitchers’ arms are treated like royalty; they work one game and then typically rest for five days. A starting pitcher will usually throw around 100 pitches and many at 90+ mph so this gives them time to recover. Kershaw went in to pitch last night on one day of rest. It’s a big deal because he risked injury to win the game for his team. Although if he didn't, the Dodgers may have lost and been eliminated from the playoffs.

The Rundown: Weekend Wrap Up Edition - Labor Day Love

This season's opening weekend of college football was touted as the best ever and unlike Crystal Pepsi, it lived up to the hype. Saturday gave us a mind-blowing (or mind-numbing for some) 21 hours straight of football. 

We have the highlights to start your Labor Day. Now you can bring something great to the BBQ besides wine.

NCAA Football (College)

  • A game for the ages. Last night’s game between Notre Dame and Texas is already candidate for game of the year. The back and forth battle gave us all we could ask for, eventually being won in double overtime by Texas in front of 102,000 fans.
  • Sportsmanship at its finest. In July, Nebraska punter Sam Foltz and Michigan State punter Mike Sadler were killed in a car accident on their way home from a kicking camp in Wisconsin. On the first punt of Saturday’s game, a very emotional Nebraska team sent out 10 of 11 players for the play. In honor of Foltz, they were missing the punter and they received a delay of game penalty. In a classy show of sportsmanship, their opponent Fresno State declined the penalty and let Nebraska punt without a penalty. 
  • We’re not done yet. There’s still one more game tonight where Florida State (#4) will open their season against Ole Miss (#11).

MLB (Major League Baseball)

  • Welcome back. Los Angeles Dodgers’ star pitcher Clayton Kershaw went on the disabled list with back issues in June and the teams’ season outlook was bleak. Since then, the Dodgers have overcome a huge deficit and are now leading the division by two games over the San Francisco Giants. Kershaw is set to start on Friday and Dodgers fans everywhere are doing their happy dance.

NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing)

  • Waving the flag. Martin Truex Jr. took home his first checked flag in Darlington yesterday. Before the race, Dale Earnhardt Jr. discussed his health during a press conference. Earlier his team announced that he would not return to racing this season due to his concussion-like symptoms. During the press conference Earnhardt said, “I definitely don’t belong in a race car today by any stretch of the imagination."

Tennis

  • In U.S. Open news, Rafael Nadal lost in the fourth round to Lucas Pouille. For the first time since 2004, Nadal did not reach the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam Tournament in a calendar year. 

Overtime

  • Lauren Holiday, two-time gold medalist and member of the winning U.S.A. Women’s World Cup team (soccer), has been diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. She and her husband New Orleans Pelicans (basketball) guard Jrue Holiday are expecting a baby next month. He announced yesterday that he will take indefinite leave from his team to be with his family. Doctors will have to wait until six weeks after the birth of Baby Holiday to perform Lauren's surgery, which means Jrue will miss the start of the NBA season.

Sideline stat

  • The two-man battle for the overall points lead between F1 (Formula One) drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg became a little more interesting on Sunday. Hamilton’s car failed to move as the race started and Rosberg took advantage and brought home the win. Hamilton battled back to finish second. Rosberg cut the points lead to two points as the teams head east for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Coaches’ Corner

  • What’s a delay of game penalty? Delay of game means the offense failed to snap the ball before the play clock expired. Teams are given 40 seconds between plays to set up their guys and if they can’t get their acts together in the allotted time, they receive a five-yard penalty.
